Hints and Tips
Prior to conducting critical literacy activities, beginning teachers should be aware of the following:
· Individuals will invariably select texts that affirm their own beliefs and existing knowledge (Knobel, 1998), so teachers should be mindful of how their interpretations may influence students.
· Our way of working may not align with student preferences. Allowing students to voice opinion assists teachers to maintain relevancy (Goff, 2013).
· The sociocultural perspective behind skills-based and genre approaches is complimentary to critical literacy (Knobel, 1998), and assists to determine a point of focus.
